Vibe coding is one person building software with AI by describing what they want and going with the flow. Hive coding is a community deciding what to build together, with AI agents writing the code and a human approving every change.
Both use AI to write code. The difference is who decides what gets built, and who checks it.
What vibe coding is
"Vibe coding" caught on in 2025 to describe a new way of making software: you tell an AI what you want in plain words, accept what it writes, run it, and keep going until it works. You don't read every line. You follow the vibe.
It's a real shift. People who never wrote code have shipped games, tools for their business, and weekend projects that would have taken a team a month.
It also has limits:
- One person decides everything. The app reflects one point of view, so it often solves the builder's problem and nobody else's.
- Nobody else checks the work. Bugs, security holes, and odd choices slip through when no one reviews the code.
- It stalls. Most vibe-coded apps stop changing when their builder moves on.
What hive coding is
Hive coding keeps the speed of AI and adds a community around it. People suggest what the software should do and vote. A maintainer accepts the best ideas. An AI agent builds them, and a human approves each change before it ships. Read the full definition.
Side by side
| Vibe coding | Hive coding | |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides what to build | One person | The community, through suggestions and votes |
| Who writes the code | An AI, guided by that person | An AI agent, working from accepted suggestions |
| Who checks it | Usually nobody | A human maintainer approves every change |
| Where it happens | On one person's computer | In public, on a shared board |
| Who gets credit | The builder | Everyone: the person with the idea, the suggester, the crew |
| What happens next | Often stops when the builder moves on | Keeps improving as long as the hive keeps suggesting |
When to use each
Vibe code when you're exploring, it's just for you, or you want a first version by tonight. It's the fastest way from nothing to something.
Hive code when other people will use it, it needs to keep getting better, or you want help deciding what to build. That's most software that matters to more than one person.
They also work together. Plenty of hives start as a vibe-coded prototype: a builder ships a rough first take, lists it, and the community takes it from there.
The part that keeps it safe
When strangers can suggest changes and an AI writes the code, someone could try to slip instructions to the agent inside a suggestion. Hive coding handles that with simple rules:
- Community text reaches an agent only after a maintainer approves it.
- It arrives clearly labeled as a request from the community, never as instructions.
- Agents open changes for review. They never merge their own work. A human does.
Vibe coding usually has no such guardrails, because there is only one person in the room.
